5. Liberalism

Liberalism is a tradition of social, economic and political thought that is centred on limited government, individual rights, utilitarianism, private property, laissez-faire economics, legal protections, progress, freedom, and perfectibility. It also stresses the toleration of differences, particularly differences in viewpoints and beliefs, and a respect for individual freedom of thought. A general definition of liberalism is as follows: an ideology that situates society in the rule of law, restricts state power to constitutional limitations (separation of powers), and favours legal or administrative reforms in the direction of its two primary values, democratic governance and individual freedom (economic and political). Liberalism has four basic principles: i) individualism, involving the moral primacy of the person over the collective and individual choice in life-defining decisions; ii) egalitarianism, meaning that all peoples have the same moral status, and legal or political hierarchies based on differences between individuals are illegitimate; iii) universalism, which holds that the human species is morally united and particular historical and cultural forms are secondary; and iv) meliorism, or the belief in progress and the improvement or perfectibility of both human beings and society.542
